Nodular disease of the thyroid gland is a common one and refers to lumps, colloid nodules, degenerative cysts, hyperplasia, thyroiditis, or benign neoplasms. More than 90 percent of thyroid nodules are not harmful or cancerous. Many don’t even need treatment. Among people who have thyroid nodules, thyroid cancer is found in about 8 percent of men and 4 percent of women. Thyroid cancers need to be removed by surgery, after which radioactive iodine therapy may be needed to destroy any remaining thyroid cells. If thyroid nodules are causing the thyroid gland to over produce thyroid hormones, they also should be surgically removed. Nodules classified as benign can be safely followed with ultrasound at 6-18 month intervals. They can be managed without routine surgery, provided that adequate follow-up is possible.
